March 2003:
Angi and I had been together about six months, and we wanted to go on a road trip for spring break. Of course, the beach sounded good, so we decided to head off to Padre Island in Texas. Depending on your style, this may or may not be the Padre Island you're thinking of... Padre Island National Seashore, not the wacky party place with booze and parties, but the quiet beach with shorebirds and camping out.
Now, on the subject of camping, Angi had really only been camping in the back yard until this point. She was pretty brave and trusting to head off on a week long road trip, supported only by camping. Since the beach is about 1,400 miles from Boulder, we found two stops along the way so we could do the drive in two days.
Our three destinations were: Guadalupe Mountains National Park, home of Texas'h
ighest peak, Balmorhea State Park in Texas, and Padre Islands National Seashor.
GMNP and PINS were both great. Balmorhea was a neat place to stop for the night, but certainly not a trip in itself.
